Trudeau’s Catch And Release Policies Are Endangering Canadians

Ottawa, ON – After nine years of Justin Trudeau, the Liberal Government’s dangerous catch and release policies are making Canadians unsafe. In 2022 alone, 256 people were murdered by a criminal who was out on release, while violent crime has increased by 39 percent.

The tragic consequences of Trudeau’s soft-on-crime policies were seen again after revelations yesterday that the accused killer of Tori Dunn was set loose on our streets ahead of the murder, despite a near psychopathic diagnosis, a history of violent offences, and numerous encounters with law enforcement.

After committing robbery, this criminal was granted bail, even though he had been charged in the months prior with theft, resisting arrest and breaching probation. On top of this, officials in Canada’s correction service deemed him to be a “high risk for future violence.” This murderer should have never been released from jail to commit this horrific crime.

Trudeau’s radical catch-and-release policies are allowing repeat, violent offenders to avoid jail. Since the Trudeau Government passed Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, which gave high priority to releasing repeat violent offenders and took away mandatory jail time for certain violent crimes, a crime wave has been unleashed across the country.

Trudeau’s weak bail reform Bill C-48, introduced last year, failed to protect Tori Dunn. Just as Conservatives said it would, it continues to allow repeat violent offenders to access easy bail.

As a direct consequence of Trudeau’s soft-on-crime ideology, the number of murders has increased by 43 percent while gang-related homicides have increased by 108 percent since the Liberals formed government in 2015.

Last week, Common Sense Conservatives called for an emergency meeting at the Public Safety Committee so MPs can examine how Trudeau’s catch and release laws are turning loose repeat violent offenders back onto our streets only to turn around and murder our people. But the NDP-Liberal coalition, along with the Bloc, refused to end their summer vacations.

Enough is enough. Violent, repeat offenders must be given jail, not bail, before more violent crime and murders happen in our communities. Only Common Sense Conservatives will end the insanity and bring home safe streets.
